Strong Earthquake Jolts South West China.

National death toll rises to 14,866 two days after quake

A powerful earthquake in China is feared to have killed thousands of people in the southwestern province of Sichuan. Rescuers were Tuesday night racing against time to find survivors a day after the strongest quake to hit China in 32 years jolted southwestern Sichuan province, demolishing buildings and trapping tens of thousands beneath the rubble. The confirmed national death toll reached 14,866 by 2 pm Wednesday, nearly all of them in Sichuan, according to the temporary disaster relief headquarters.

Previous attempts by rescuers to reach the epicenter "by land, air and water" failed because of landslides, telecommunication breakdown and rain, an official with the Sichuan provincial relief headquarters said.

Huge amounts of relief materials are required. An unprecedented domestic relief response is now underway.

With the day 08 August 2008 approaching, when Beijing Olympic Games will be opening, Chinese government has been nowadays paying more and more attention to environmental protection issues. This kind of influencing factor might affect quarries mining, especially with all quarries around Hebei Province in the months of this June, July and August. Hebei is the nearest province to Beijing. Most quarries there might be suspended during the three-month period.

June is also traditionally the Month for Safety over the whole year, most local mining authorities in China would enhance the safety inspection, therefore quarries would be revaluated their safety situations. Some quarries in Fujian, such as those in Zhangpu area might be affected by that and mining would be likely paused during June or to July.

We could not predict more mining suspension, but China‘s authorities are now more and more aware of the importance of environmental protection.
